IFS
Internal Family Systems, according to Dick Schwartz, is a transformative tool that conceives of every human being as a system of protective and wounded inner parts led by a core Self. We believe the mind is naturally multiple, which is good. Like family members, inner parts are forced from their valuable states into extreme roles within us. Self is in everyone. It can’t be damaged. It knows how to heal.
Exiles
Exiles, in IFS, are the “bad” stuff. Past trauma, shameful memories, and bad thoughts are all exiles. Managers work to keep these exiles in the background so that they don't cause distress. Sometimes, however, they break through and begin to surface. That's where the next category comes in.
